11-Day Danakil, Afar, Harar & Tigray Adventure

Arrive in Addis Ababa and meet your tour leader at Bole International Airport. After transferring to your hotel, take time to relax before beginning a short city exploration. Walk through Piazza and its surrounding streets, where historic architecture, cafés, shops, and busy markets create a lively introduction to Ethiopia.

In the evening, enjoy a traditional welcome dinner with your guide and receive a briefing about the journey ahead.

After breakfast, fly from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa. Upon arrival, begin the drive toward the historic city of Harar. Along the way, visit Dire Dawa Railway Station and explore local markets, including the famous spice market.

Continue to Awaday, one of the region’s important trading centers, where you can observe the lively khat market when it is operating. Later, proceed to Harar and settle into your accommodation.

Spend the day discovering the remarkable walled city of Harar. Walk through narrow alleyways, colorful neighborhoods, historic gates, and traditional markets while your local guide explains the city's history and cultural traditions.

Harar is known for its distinctive architecture and vibrant community life. In the evening, experience one of the city's famous traditions: a supervised visit to see the local hyena feeding outside the historic walls.

Leave Harar in the morning and drive toward Awash National Park, enjoying changing landscapes as the highlands give way to drier Rift Valley scenery. After arrival, settle into your lodge overlooking the spectacular Awash Falls.

Later, explore the park's surroundings and enjoy views of Fantale Volcano. Depending on conditions and time, visit a natural hot spring before an afternoon or evening game drive. Wildlife may include Beisa oryx, Soemmerring's gazelles, baboons, and various bird species.

Today is dedicated to exploring Awash National Park. Set out on a morning game drive through the park's diverse habitats and look for wildlife while enjoying the dramatic volcanic landscape.

Afterward, take time to relax at the lodge or continue exploring selected areas with your guide. The combination of savannah, volcanic scenery, river landscapes, and wildlife makes Awash a rewarding stop before entering the Afar region.

After breakfast, continue east toward Semera, the capital of the Afar Region. The landscape gradually becomes drier and more desert-like as you enter Afar territory.

In the afternoon, visit the Alalobad area when conditions permit, where colorful hot springs and geothermal features create striking contrasts against the surrounding desert. Return to Semera afterward and prepare for the more remote section of the journey.

Begin the journey toward Afdera, passing through remote Afar landscapes and traditional settlements. Along the way, you may see nomadic communities and distinctive traditional grass-built homes.

Continue to Lake Afrera, a spectacular salt lake surrounded by an arid volcanic landscape. Depending on local conditions, enjoy time near the lake and its geothermal springs. As evening approaches, settle into the camp and experience the extraordinary atmosphere of the Danakil region.

Continue by 4WD toward Dodom, the starting point for the Erta Ale adventure. Because daytime temperatures can be extreme, the ascent begins later in the day when conditions become cooler.

Hike toward the volcano with your local Afar team and support crew. After several hours of walking, reach the volcanic summit area and observe the dramatic crater landscape. When volcanic activity and safety conditions allow, you may see the glow of the lava lake.

Overnight: Basic Camp near Erta Ale

Wake early to enjoy the sunrise over the volcanic landscape and, when conditions allow, explore the northern crater area. Descend toward Dodom in the morning and take time for breakfast and rest.

Afterward, continue by 4WD toward Hamed Ela through the remote Danakil landscape. The journey provides opportunities to see salt plains, volcanic terrain, and the stark desert environment.

Start early for an exploration of Dallol and its extraordinary geothermal landscape. Along the route, stop at Lake Karum, also known as Lake Asale, where vast salt flats and traditional salt-mining activities can be observed when conditions permit.

Continue to Dallol to see colorful mineral formations, salt deposits, hot springs, and other geothermal features. Afterward, leave the Danakil Depression and travel toward the greener highlands of Gheralta.

Arrive at your lodge and enjoy a well-earned evening surrounded by the dramatic Gheralta Mountains.

Spend the morning exploring selected historical sites in the Gheralta and Tigray region, depending on access, time, and local conditions. The area is famous for its ancient rock-hewn churches and spectacular mountain scenery.

Later, drive toward Mekele and transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Depending on your international flight schedule, connect with your onward journey or spend an additional night in Addis Ababa.
