Historic North Ethiopia Trek | 14 Days Community Trekking

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, meet your driver and transfer to your hotel in Addis Ababa. After some time to refresh, begin your introduction to Ethiopia with a visit to the National Museum, home to important archaeological discoveries. Later, explore the lively Mercato area and enjoy your first Ethiopian coffee experience. In the evening, relax at your hotel and prepare for the journey ahead.

After breakfast, take a morning flight to Bahir Dar. Upon arrival, travel toward the famous Blue Nile Falls and enjoy a scenic walk through the surrounding countryside. The route offers beautiful views of the river valley, local villages, and cultivated fields. Afterward, return to Bahir Dar and spend the afternoon relaxing beside Lake Tana or exploring the city at your own pace.

Start the morning with a boat excursion across Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. Visit selected historic monasteries located on islands and peninsulas, where ancient paintings, manuscripts, and religious traditions provide insight into Ethiopia’s history. After lunch, drive to Gondar. Later, explore the Royal Enclosure, Fasilides’ Bath, and Debre Birhan Selassie Church, known for its remarkable ceiling paintings.

Leave Gondar after breakfast and drive toward Debark, the gateway to the Simien Mountains. After completing the park formalities and meeting your local trekking team, continue into the mountains by 4WD. Begin your first acclimatization walk through the highland landscape toward Sankaber. Enjoy dramatic escarpment views and watch for Gelada baboons along the route. Arrive at camp and relax with traditional Ethiopian coffee.

After breakfast, begin trekking along the spectacular Simien escarpment toward Geech. The trail passes through giant heather vegetation and open highland scenery before reaching the viewpoint of Jinbar Falls, where the water drops dramatically into the valley below. Continue through changing landscapes while watching for birds and highland wildlife. Before reaching Geech, enjoy a cultural encounter with a local family and experience traditional coffee and injera.

Today is one of the most scenic trekking days in the Simien Mountains. Leave Geech and walk across open Afro-alpine terrain toward Imet Gogo, a spectacular viewpoint with wide-ranging views across the mountain valleys. Continue toward Inatye, climbing through highland landscapes before descending gradually toward Chenek. Along the way, look for Gelada baboons and Walia ibex, which are frequently seen around Chenek.

After breakfast, leave the Simien Mountains and travel north toward Axum. The journey passes through dramatic mountain scenery and the Tekeze Valley, with several opportunities to stop for photographs and refreshments. Continue to Axum, the historic center of the ancient Axumite Kingdom. In the afternoon, explore the town and learn about its connections with Ethiopia’s early Christian history and ancient civilization.

Today, begin the community trekking section of the journey. First, travel toward the historic Yeha area and visit its ancient archaeological remains and nearby cultural sites. Then continue to the trekking starting point and walk through the rural landscape toward a local community guesthouse. During the hike, enjoy views of rugged cliffs, valleys, farmland, and traditional settlements. In the evening, share a meal with local hosts and experience the warm hospitality of the community.

Continue your community trekking adventure through the distinctive sandstone landscapes of Tigray. The trail leads from the lower valleys toward Gohgot, passing rural settlements, cultivated land, and dramatic rock formations. Along the way, observe traditional farming practices and enjoy conversations with local residents when possible. Later, arrive at the community guesthouse and relax while taking in expansive views across the surrounding valleys.

After breakfast, continue through the highland landscape on your final community trekking day. Follow the trail toward Shimbrety, where impressive cliffs and unusual rock formations surround the route. One of the memorable features is a rock passage created through the ridge, providing access between local communities and the nearby Maryam Buzuhan church. Spend the evening enjoying the peaceful surroundings and your final night among the Tigray highlands.

After breakfast, complete the final section of the community trail before transferring toward the Gheralta Mountains. Depending on the travel date, you may have the opportunity to visit a local market and observe everyday life in the region. After lunch, explore one or more of Gheralta’s remarkable rock-hewn churches. Built into dramatic cliffs, these historic churches combine religious traditions, ancient artwork, and spectacular mountain views.

Today, leave the Gheralta region and travel south toward Lalibela. The journey passes through rural highlands, traditional villages, cultivated valleys, and changing mountain scenery. Make stops along the route to photograph the landscape and meet local communities where appropriate. Arrive in Lalibela later in the day and enjoy a relaxing evening after the long journey.

Spend the day exploring Lalibela, one of Ethiopia’s most important historic destinations. Visit the extraordinary rock-hewn churches carved from volcanic stone, including the famous Church of Saint George. Afterward, enjoy free time to explore Lalibela’s streets, local shops, or restaurants.
